Master the art of showing up – Anonymous

The Power of Showing Up

About six months ago, Hadef Alsamat and Shane McCrea pulled over when they noticed a car on fire on the other side of the road. They ran across four lanes to investigate and found a man unconscious inside. As other drivers passed by, the men struggled to get the man out, as his legs were stuck under the steering wheel. With the flames now consuming the car, they realized the man wasn’t breathing. Alsamat started CPR, and when the man jolted back to life, they moved him to a safe distance from the fire. Firefighters, police, and EMS arrived, got the fire out and loaded the man into an ambulance. He survived. Alsamat and McCrea remind us about the power of showing up and how, in some instances, it could be the difference between life and death. Let us look at the impact showing up has on our lives.

Engagement

Alsamat and McCrea were able to engage in the act of saving a man’s life because they chose to show up. They were able to serve and save someone in danger of losing their life by showing up and engaging. Strong relationships are not built by accident but with engagement from being available and showing up in others’ lives. One way I try to show up for others is by being available for what matters to them, no matter how small. Showing up for others can be likened to being a gardener. Gardening requires intentionality, engagement, and care It requires preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering (my favorite part), weeding and nurturing. When we show up for others we are like gardeners. Alsamat and McCrea didn’t accidentally save a life; they were intentional about showing up, and the results are the proof.

Strong relationships are not built by accident but with engagement from being available and showing up in others’ lives.

Excellence

Excellence in life comes with your level of engagement in what you show up for. We don’t stumble into excellence; we engage our way into it. What are you looking to excel in? The key is engagement; for that to occur, you need to show up or be available. When my wife decided to learn how to play the keyboard, I noticed her commitment to showing up and engaging in the lessons. She was all in. Over time, her availability and engagement converted into excellence. Not to brag, but now my wife is able to play a song just by listening to it. No chords are needed!

We don’t stumble into excellence; we engage our way into it.

Enlightenment

In addition to engagement and excellence, being available or showing up leads to enlightenment. You’ll begin to see life at a level not previously known. A wide swath of  growth opportunities becomes visible because by showing up, you form a collaborative environment that makes you better. Through collaboration you also find solutions to problems you couldn’t solve independently because you draw from different perspectives. You cannot lose when you choose to show up!

Final Thought: Being available has a price. But as you consistently practice this skill, it will lead to greater engagement, excellence, and enlightenment. Marshall the power of showing up to the areas in life you want to grow and you will discover a higher quality of life awaits you.

Keep on keeping on!
