Your Best Ability

Bringing Your Best

Ability is the possession of the means or skill to do something. Performing various functions well comes down to our abilities. From simple abilities like walking to more complicated ones such as programming, abilities cover a massive range of what we can do. Whereas we view ability from the perspective of what we acquire through formal education, our most valuable abilities lie within us. We will discover both incremental and exponential growth if we apply these abilities daily and develop them. These abilities are easy to underestimate or step over because we don’t view them in their proper light. It’s often the things we overlook that have the potential to impact our lives. The three abilities we will discuss this month are life-changing. Let’s preview each one.

Figure 1 shows how bringing your best brings upward mobility in your life.

This Month’s Preview

Avail-ability (posting on 3/14/24): This is the art of showing up. Simply put, you cannot grow where you don’t show. We remain stagnant Without showing up to the gym for exercise, a relationship for connection, a class to learn or work to develop professionally. Availability exposes us to opportunities that we would otherwise miss. I realized that being available to my children has a positive effect in shaping who they are. My availability communicates that I value them and they matter. Availability allows me to spend time with them, give them attention, and personalize my love for them. Be available for the right things, and your life will soar.

Response-ability (posting on 3/21/24): This is the art of handling your business. Winston Churchill famously said, “The price of greatness is responsibility.” The path to responsibility is riddled with the traps of excuses. Taking responsibility increases our positive influence in the spheres we find ourselves in. I believe that we all have influence. However, the reach or effect of that influence is proportional to our willingness to be responsible. When people know you are responsible, trust grows, and you become reliable.

Reli-ability (posting on 3/28/24): This is the art of doing both well. You become reliable when you are available and responsible. Former President Obama made this unequivocal statement about reliability, an invaluable trait in any area of life: “Just learn how to get stuff done.” When you keep showing up and handling your business, you are reliable, and people take notice. Not only does your trust grow, but so does your value.

Just learn how to get stuff done.

President Barack Obama

Final Thought: In life, there are many abilities we can acquire, but if we weave these three abilities into our lives, we will soar on their wings, and our lives will impact others in diverse ways.

Keep on keeping on!
